Frederick Wildman & Sons - Wholesale Company was established with the inception of the Company in 1934. Its’ origins date back to the year after the repeal of prohibition and was created to support the portfolio of top estates from around the world in the New York metro area. The strategy for the division remained intact throughout the 1900’s. With a new management structure in place, in 2005, the company expanded the Wholesale base of operations to Upstate New York and New Jersey. The commitment to Family owned properties that have pioneered the development of Fine Wines resonates in all regions of our portfolio. Today, the Wholesale Company consists of three units, Downstate New York, Upstate New York and New Jersey. We employ fifty sales representatives, eight sales managers and six sales service representatives focused on our portfolio and clientele. We are proud of our long standing relationships with our Winery partners, both domestically and internationally. Our objective is simple; we are here to service all of the Fine Wine needs required of our local restaurateurs and retailers in this challenging market.

Featured Producer: El Coto de Rioja

Iñigo Echávarri was born in 1986, in Pamplona. He moved to Rioja as a child, and eventually spent his summers working at El Coto de Rioja and Baron de Ley where his father worked for decades. As a teenager, Iñigo participated in the harvest and worked in every single department of the winery since he was 16 years old, gaining valuable experience and earning dubious titles such as holding, along with his brother, the official record for most bottles broken in one week as part of the bottling line staff. In 2009, Iñigo graduated from La Rioja University with a law degree. Iñigo also underwent an intensive internship in London with the Young’s Pub Company, pouring worldwide wines (mainly El Coto and Baron de Ley, of course), improving his English and becoming a darting legend.

From 2010 to 2011, Iñigo attended the ICADE school in Madrid where he received a MBA degree. While a student at ICADE, he worked for Ramondín SA, the world’s largest producer of wine capsules, as a financial analyst. He returned to Grupo Baron de Ley, taking on a position in the export department in September 2012. In this role, he is responsible for the United States, among other important foreign markets, and represents the energy and passion of a new generation at Grupo Baron de Ley abroad.

Winery

El Coto de Rioja, located in Oyón, was founded in 1970 by a group of winemakers committed to creating high-quality Rioja wines at prices everyone could afford. Today, El Coto is the leading quality brand in Rioja and among the top-selling Spanish wines in Europe.

As the largest owner of vineyards in Rioja, El Coto selects vineyards ideal for each of its wine offerings. A one-stop-shop for Rioja lovers, El Coto provides basic Blanco, Rosado and Crianza, as well as, cellar-able Reservas and Gran Reservas. Continually reinvesting in the business, El Coto is the largest buyer of oak barrels in the world and houses at any given time over 5 million bottles of Reserva wines, waiting for the ideal moment to release them.

Tradition and innovation are at the core of El Coto. While continuing the proud tradition of the usual Rioja offerings, El Coto is investing in higher elevation to embrace the new appellation rules allowing the use of Garnacha and Verdejo, ensuring that El Coto will be at the forefront of the next generation of Rioja wines.

The Category: Rioja

Rioja is sandwiched between two mountain ranges, protecting it from the cold of the north and the dry heat of the central plains. The region is divided into three sub-regions: Alto, Alavesa and Baja. Alto is know for wines that can age and is where most reserve wines come from. Alavesa wines have an elegant signature, and Baja wines are round and approachable.

This region’s denomination rules are focused on categories based on aging rules rather than geographic limitations. El Coto distinguishes itself in this environment by aging its wines, even entry level Crianza, longer than required by law. Releasing wines when they are ready is yet another way that El Coto guarantees quality in each bottle across the range.
